Kyushu sits in Japan's warm southwest, so its seasons run a touch milder and longer than Tokyo's. That's good news: there's no truly bad time to come — only trade-offs between blossoms, heat, crowds, and price. As someone who lives through all four seasons here in Oita, here's the honest month-by-month.
Skip to the season you're considering, or read the pick-by-goal table at the end if you already know what you want from the trip.
The Short Answer
For most travelers, the two best windows are late March–April (cherry blossoms, fresh air) and late October–November (golden foliage, crisp comfortable days). Both bring lovely weather and big scenery, at the cost of higher demand.
Want fewer crowds and lower prices? Winter is Kyushu's underrated secret — mild by Japanese standards, and onsen season at its absolute best. The one window to approach with eyes open is June's rainy season and the deep heat of late July–August.
Spring (March–May) — Blossoms & Balance

Spring is the postcard season. Because Kyushu is warm, cherry blossoms usually open here a little earlier than in Tokyo or Kyoto — typically late March into early April, depending on the year and the spot. Castle moats, riverbanks, and parks turn pink, and the weather is mild and walkable.
Pros: Beautiful scenery, comfortable temperatures, long daylight.
Cons: Peak demand around blossom dates and Golden Week (late April–early May) — book early. Our full cherry blossom guide has timing and the best viewing spots.
Heads-up: Golden Week (around Apr 29–May 5) is a domestic-travel rush — trains and hotels fill and prices jump. Lovely weather, but the busiest week of spring.
Rainy Season & Summer (June–August) — Green, Hot & Lively

June brings the tsuyu rainy season — humid, with stretches of rain (though rarely all-day, every-day). It greens the mountains beautifully and crowds thin out. Late July and August are genuinely hot and humid, but also festival season, with fireworks and summer energy everywhere.
Pros: Fewer foreign tourists in June, summer festivals, lush scenery, and Kyushu's rivers, gorges and beaches at their best for cooling off.
Cons: Real heat and humidity in midsummer; an outside chance of typhoons late summer. Pack light, hydrate, and plan indoor onsen/museum breaks.
Summer also brings two of Fukuoka's biggest events — the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in July and the lively yatai food-stall nights.
Autumn (September–November) — The Sweet Spot

If I had to pick one season for a first Kyushu trip, it's autumn. September still carries summer's warmth, but by October and November the air turns crisp, the humidity drops, and the foliage lights up — especially in the highlands around Mount Aso, Takachiho, and the onsen valleys.
Pros: Arguably the most comfortable weather of the year, gorgeous color, perfect onsen temperatures, and festival season.
Cons: Popular weekends book up — particularly events like Beppu's autumn carnival (in 2026, a Tokyo Disney Resort® Special Parade on Oct 31). Reserve hotels ahead for late-October weekends.
Winter (December–February) — Onsen Season, Low Crowds
Kyushu's best-kept secret. Winters here are mild compared with the rest of Japan — coastal cities like Fukuoka and Kagoshima rarely see snow, though the mountains do. And there is nothing better than sinking into a steaming outdoor bath in cold air.
Pros: The lowest crowds and often the best hotel prices, peak onsen atmosphere, clear skies, and steaming hot-spring towns like Kurokawa at their most magical.
Cons: Shorter days, chilly mornings, and the New Year holiday (late Dec–early Jan) is busy and pricey for a week. Outside that week, winter is wonderfully quiet.
Winter tip: This is the season to splurge on a ryokan with a private open-air bath. See our first ryokan stay guide.
